American roulette is the wheel with two green pockets, 0 and 00, and 36 numbers between them, 38 pockets in all. Every payout you know from the single-zero game still applies, but each bet now has to win from a wheel with one more pocket against it. If you open a roulette table in the lobby’s Live game section, count the green pockets first; the wider live casino table rules page covers the other games you will meet there.

Double zero roulette: the arithmetic

Start from the payouts Pragmatic Play’s Live Roulette help lists for a single-zero wheel: 35 to 1 on a straight-up number, 17 to 1 on a split, 11 to 1 on a street, 8 to 1 on a corner, 5 to 1 on a six line, 2 to 1 on a column or dozen and 1 to 1 on even chances. That help text also gives the single-zero game a theoretical return of 97.30 per cent. If an American table pays those same odds, the extra pocket does all the damage.

A straight-up bet shows it. A fair payout on 38 pockets would be 37 to 1, but the bet pays 35 to 1, so the shortfall is 2 units in 38. That is 2/38, or 5.26 per cent, kept by the house on every spin.

BetPockets coveredChance to win
Straight up11/38 = 2.63%
Dozen or column1212/38 = 31.58%
Red, black, odd, even1818/38 = 47.37%

The same bets on a 37-pocket wheel win 2.70, 32.43 and 48.65 per cent of the time. The double zero does not touch the payout line; it trims the chance to win on every row.

American vs European roulette in one table

Set the two wheels side by side and the whole difference is one pocket.

Take a ₱100 stake on red for 100 spins. At 18/38 the expected loss is about ₱526 on the American wheel and about ₱270 on the European one, both before any variance. The French roulette la partage rules page shows how a half-stake refund on zero cuts the European figure further.

What stays the same on the American wheel

Inside bets still pay by the number of pockets they cover, and outside bets still skip the greens. A column, dozen or even-chance bet is lost when 0 or 00 lands. With two green pockets, 2 spins in every 38 on average are lost by every even-money bet before colour even matters. That is the practical meaning of the double zero for a player who sticks to red and black.

The wheel-sector bets built for single-zero tables do not translate cleanly. Pragmatic Play’s help describes Voisins du Zero, Tiers du Cylindre and Orphelins on a 37-number racetrack, so check what a table offers before you rely on them; the roulette racetrack sectors page lays out that single-zero order.

How to check an American table before you stake

  1. Count the green pockets on the layout or the wheel: 0 and 00 means 38 pockets.
  2. Open the rules or Bet Limits and Payouts window and read the payout for each bet you plan to use.
  3. Look for any rule that pays something back on zero or double zero; if none is listed, assume the full stake is lost.
  4. Set a stake that fits your bankroll; the bankroll management meaning entry explains how to fix it before the first spin.

If the table lists payouts below those above, the 5.26 per cent figure rises for that bet.

FAQ

Is American roulette worse than European roulette?

On the arithmetic, yes. 2 green pockets out of 38 is 5.26 per cent against 1 out of 37 at 2.70 per cent, for the same payouts.

Does la partage apply to American roulette?

Do red and black cover the double zero?

No. Red, black, odd, even, low and high cover 18 numbers each, and neither green pocket belongs to any of them.
