Autofill passwords: what it does

Autofill passwords fills in a login when you select the username field on a sign-in page, as Google’s page describes. On a phone only you use, that saves typing. On a shared phone, anyone who opens the page can reach the same filled form.

Pick the setting per situation. A phone you share with a partner, a child or a friend who borrows it for games is a shared phone, even if nobody else has an account on it.

Stop Chrome offering to save

Google’s page gives one route to switch off the offer. Go to Settings, Google Password Manager, Settings, then turn Offer to save passwords off. After that, Chrome stops asking each time you sign in.

  1. Open Settings, then Google Password Manager.
  2. Tap Settings inside it.
  3. Switch Offer to save passwords off.

Private tabs behave differently from saved logins, see incognito mode on a shared phone. If you want to limit time as well as logins, read about a phone screen time limit.

Protect the phone itself

Treat the phone lock as part of the password. A saved login is only as protected as the phone. Apple’s Low Power Mode shortens Auto-Lock to 30 seconds, which locks the screen sooner, as described in the Low Power Mode page. A shorter lock time is one practical way to protect a saved login when you put the phone down.

Check the list on a schedule

A saved-login list grows quietly. Once a month, open Google Password Manager and scan the entries. Delete any you no longer use, and any that sit on a phone someone else borrows.

  1. Open Chrome, tap More, then Settings.
  2. Tap Google Password Manager.
  3. Read down the list and delete what you do not recognise.

Phone makers and Chrome versions word these menus differently, so search Settings for “Password Manager” when a name is missing. If you would rather type the login each time, switch the offer to save passwords off and skip the list entirely.
